fcsLock® is a QuarkXpress® XTension designed specifically for newspapers and other large periodicals that require network cooperation between workers.
When working with fcsPress the main editor will prepare a master page in XPress, and he will assign an editor number to each box. Once this master page is ready, the XTension will split this document in as many documents as there are editors assigned to it. The splitted files are placed in specified folders according to the group they belong to. These files can be distributed on the network to each editor, who will fill in the text and picture boxes that he has been assigned. Once the splitted files are ready fcsPress will join them into a new single document ready for final printing.
The main advantage of fcsPress over other systems is that each worker uses XPress to type his text, so he can see exactly how the final page will print, including hyphenation, colors, column placement, etc.
Some of the options that fcsPress has are:
• Saving configuration files to disk so that different publications can be handled easily.
• Splitting and Joining can be performed by group or individually.
• Splitted files are placed into one of five different folders according to the group they belong to.
• Files that are ready to be Joined are read from one of five folders according to group number.
• Splitting and Joining folders can be specified as fixed (in the standard Macintosh way), or with a variable path. Using a variable path allows you to have a single configuration, and with the variable specify which group of folders should be used. This option is specially useful when using the current date as a variable.
• The splitted files can contain or not the boxes that belong to other editors. The boxes that belong to other editors are colored according to the group they belong to.
• Creation of a special information document that will show for each XPress box the following information: ID, Editor, Width, Height, Type, Size, Horizontal Scale, Leading, Justification, Style, and Font used.
• fcsPress also has the option to create splitted documents that can only be opened if fcsLock® is installed. With this other XTension the main editor can control exactly what kind of modifications the workers can do to the documents.
This copy of fcsPress is a demo version, and as such it has certain limitations. When joining or splitting documents the demo version will always only process the first Group, no matter what other groups or numbers are selected in the joining and splitting windows. In this demo version the first Group is limited to a maximum of three editors (1, 2 and 3). In the normal version of fcsPress the maximum number of editors is 300 distributed into five groups.
